To become a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in Prince Edward Island as a nurse from Australia or New Zealand, you’ll need to follow a series of steps through the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of Prince Edward Island (CRNMPEI). Here are the steps:

Credential Assessment:

  • Apply through the National Nursing Assessment Services (NNAS), which evaluates your education and experience against Canadian standards.
  • Submit documents such as:
    • Proof of identity
    • Nursing education transcripts
    • Verification of current registration
    • Employment history

CRNMPEI Application:

  • Once NNAS is completed, you can apply directly to CRNMPEI.
    • You may be eligible for a Streamlined Registration Pathway if you’re from a country with comparable nursing standards (Australia and New Zealand often qualify).

 NCLEX-RN Exam:

  • Most internationally educated nurses must pass the NCLEX-RN to be licensed in Canada.
    • However, some applicants from Australia or New Zealand may be exempt depending on their education and experience.
    • You must complete a PEI-specific jurisprudence module that covers provincial laws, ethics, and standards of practice.

Pharmacists who hold a current registration to practice pharmacy in another eligible jurisdiction may apply for registration with the Prince Edward Island College of Pharmacists.

Waiver of Registration Requirements-Applicants from Eligible Jurisdictions Policy:

The RP19 Waiver of Registration Requirements Policy recognizes the license of applicants from specific countries and waives certain registration requirements for applicants, including: national competency exams (PEBC), structured practice experience, or Practice Assessment of Competence at Entry (PACE).

Pharmacists  eligible for registration through this pathway must:

  • Hold a current license, without any restrictions or conditions,  in one of the following countries:
    •  Australia
    • Great Britain
    • New Zealand
    • Republic of Ireland
    • United States of America
  • Have practiced, at minimum, 600 hours as a pharmacist, without any restrictions or conditions, in the three years preceding your application for registration.

Approved applicants will be granted a registration as a pharmacist in the General Class with a condition.  The condition will be that the pharmacist will practice for 14 days under supervision of another pharmacist in the General Class in PEI.  At the end of the 14 day period, a Completion of Supervised Practice Form must be submitted to the PEI College of Pharmacy, at which time the condition of supervision will be removed.

The requirements for General Registration are set out in the Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician Regulations.

Unless otherwise specified, all documentation must be received by the PEI College of Pharmacy in its original form or as a notarized copy. Original documents may be presented to the PEI College of Pharmacy office to be copied by staff.

Applicants currently registered in another eligible jurisdiction must complete the Initial Pharmacist Application form in the applicant portal of the PEI College of Pharmacy website.
