International Medical Graduates

International Medical Students

We welcome your application if you are an international medical graduate who has completed your post-graduate residency training from an approved jurisdiction outside of Canada or the United States.

International medical specialists

If you are a medical specialist, visit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for information about applying for an assessment of your jurisdiction training. You do not have to live in Canada or hold Canadian citizenship to apply.

International family medicine physicians

For information about qualifying exams, visit the Medical Council of Canada. In most cases, one to two years of independent clinical experience in Canada is required.

Obtaining a medical licence to practice in PEI

If you are an internationally trained medical graduate, you must first obtain licensure to practice medicine in Prince Edward Island prior to a formal interview with the provincial government. Once a licence is granted and supervision requirements are known, Health PEI will then determine if you can be considered for employment.

Visit cpspei.ca for information related to applying for a licence.

Please note: Observership and volunteer work in Canada does not count toward independent clinical practice experience.
